Own your domain and site
You should make every effort to retain ownership of your domain name and website. Don’t change the Administrative Contact for your domain over to someone else unless you absolutely must. Try to avoid signing contracts that when they are terminated leave your domain and website under the ownership and control of another party. If that occurs you will have no control over what happens and you won’t see any revenue from a website with your name on it.
TIP: During a contract you can let someone else manage and operate your website, but do not let them own it.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOMAINS AND HOSTING
There is a huge difference between owning a domain name and having a website. A domain name is essentially your address on the internet (i.e. Amazon.com, MarketMSO.com, etc.). Your website is what you create (or have a web developer create) for people to see when they go to your domain. To put it into simple terms, if we were building a new house, the domain name is your lot and your website is the house. The same intrinsic rule applies to the internet, you need to own your domain name before you can build a website that people can see.
Next, your domain is managed through your ‘Registrar‘ and your website is managed through your ‘Hosting Provider‘. Back to our housebuilding example, the neighborhood's HomeOwner's Association is the Hosting Provider.
While your Registrar and Hosting Provider can be provided by one company, we highly recommend that you do not host at the same company where you purchased your domain with (we discuss this more later).
YOUR DOMAIN NAME
YOUR WEBSITE – BUILT ON THE DOMAIN NAME
Domain names are typically inexpensive, around $16 per year and you can own your domain name without having to pay for monthly hosting. You can also own several domain names and if you wanted to, you can point all of your domain names to the same website.
TIP: we HIGHLY recommend that you do not purchase your domain name at the same place that is hosting your website, this can lead to issues down the road if your hosting provider does not release the domain name to you when you want to leave.
The MarketMSO staff can help you manage your domain names and answer any questions you may have!
DOMAINS AND MARKETMSO
MarketMSO allows you to register domains through our service and every domain that you register, is registered in your name and not ours. You always own your domain name and we would never ask you to transfer the name to us, or give up ownership of your domain for any reason.
As long as you continue to pay ~$16 per year for the registration of your domain name, you will own that name forever. You can also transfer your domain name to another registrar and continue to use MarketMSO service.
If you ever have a question about domain names, please reach out to us via the forums or phone and we would be happy to help! Any of our support staff can assist with domain questions and we will get you pointed into the right direction.
