Website Ownership 101 – Part 4

MarketMSO Support Business Builder Updates, Website Series, Websites

This is a 4 part series explaining why you need a website, the importance of it and how it can help or hurt your business.

Over the years, we have run into many people who have their own website, but spend all their marketing efforts driving their customers to Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or other social media sites. All they seem to care about is how many Likes/Tweets/Pins, etc. they can get instead of focusing on driving traffic to their website. Unfortunately, some people are very shortsighted and don’t look at a website as the significant part of their business or brand that it is. They may see it as a afterthought, something they “guess” they should do.

When building or maintaining your business, your website is your future and a critical piece of everything you hope to achieve. Your website is your bit of real estate on the internet and it will be yours, potentially forever. Make sure you treat your online presence with all the seriousness it deserves.

What is the future of Facebook, Pinterest etc…

Do you remember Geocities, AOL or MySpace? Did you know that Geocities, which once was the place to build your online website shut down just 7 years ago in 2009. It seems like an eternity ago, but Facebook launched in 2006, only 10 year ago… Pinterest has only been around for 6 years.

crystal_ball_by_kestya-d52gkyfTechnology timelines are like dog years; they go by really fast! There is always a ‘new technology' company trying to develop the next big thing, but why should you care?

Over and over in this blog series, we have said that you should be somewhat fearful of building a brand based solely on social media, or ‘other people's websites'.

There is a Better Way!

If you own your own website and domain name, you do not have to fear having it shut down by anyone but you. Do we think that Facebook is going to be gone in 5 years? No, but we nearly guarantee it isn't going to look like it does now. Facebook will be different than it is now and we do not know in what ways it will change. Nobody does.

Future-Proofing Your Business

There is no magic answer, but there are 2 ways to future-proof your business from a technology perspective:

  1. Become a computer science major and learn every new technology as it comes out. Apply all new technologies to your business to ensure that you are always up-to-date with the latest and greatest technology.
  2. Own your domain so that you are in control of your future and then partner with a company/companies that keep your technology and website up to date.

Don't think it can happen to you? Read a personal account from someone whose social media page was completely removed with no explanation: Full Article. This user had 1,470,000 followers on their interest list and they were all gone in an instant. Even though it may not be in your business category, the fact that it happened should give you a moment of pause and hopefully get you to change how you view your brand.
